2020 Call for Papers

2020 CUE Conference: Revised Call for Papers

The 2020 CUE Conference planning team has decided that due to the situation caused by the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), it is not feasible to hold an in-person conference, but we feel it is important to continue to provide opportunities for CUE members to present their research, practical ideas, and professional development topics. Thus, the JALT CUE SIG is happy to announce our decision to hold our 2020 conference online on Saturday, September 12, 2020. We are excited to partner with the JALT NanKyu Chapter this year and hope our first-ever online conference will be a success. The conference will feature plenary talks by Jennie Roloff Rothman (Kanda University of International Studies) and another professor that has yet to be decided along with short presentations and professional development workshops. We would like to invite you to submit an abstract for a short presentation or professional development workshop on a topic that showcases a topic of interest to the college and university education community including, but not limited to, the following.

For the online presentations, we have decided on two formats that we feel will suit teachers’ technological levels and individual situations when presenting online. Please choose the presentation style you would like to do when submitting your abstract. Note: the presentation style can be changed if need be depending on your situation in early September.

  • Synchronous Zoom Presentations:
Twenty-five minute (including Q & A) live presentations via Zoom. Presenters will give 20-minute slide-based presentations with five minutes for Q & A. There will be a moderator/host who checks attendees in from the waiting room and monitors the text-chat then helps direct questions to the presenter during the Q & A time.
  • YouTube Premier Presentations:
Twenty-five minute pre-recorded slide-based presentations that are uploaded to our YouTube channel. These semi-live presentations will be scheduled, and the presenters will be online to answer questions from the audience via text chat during the presentation/Q & A at the scheduled presentation time.

*** Note: Both types of presentations will be recorded and uploaded to our YouTube channel for a limited time. By accepting a presentation slot at the CUE conference, presenters agree to have their presentation posted for public viewing online.

Short Presentations (25 minutes including Q & A, research or practice-based)

  • Current research on linguistics, language learning, methodology, or other related topics
  • English for specific purposes

Professional Development (45 minutes including Q & A)

These presentations are meant to help people get more involved with professional development through honing their professional skills or providing resources for getting involved with presenting, writing, conference planning, or other professional activities. In the past CUE professional development workshops have included an introduction to abstract writing, slide design, digital poster design, academic writing, empowering women, and more. We welcome these types of topics as well as topics related to planning and conducting research, grant applications, resume-writing, how to get involved, or anything else that you feel would help people develop professionally.

  • Presentation skills, getting published, applying for grants, abstract writing or reviewing, or other professional development topics you think would be useful to the CUE community
  • Issues related to gender and diversity in college and university settings

Presentations can be in English or Japanese. Teachers and students of all kinds are all very welcome and encouraged to submit proposals. Space and time permitting, we'll do our best to fit you in.

Please submit your presentation abstract and bio here.

Submission Deadline: August 10, 2020 (11:59 pm Japan time)

After the conference, presenters will be invited to submit a write-up of their presentation or a reflection of someone’s talk for our new OnCUE Journal Special Issue.
